Dear colleagues,

The Sixth International Olympiad in Theoretical, Mathematical and Applied
Linguistics for secondary school students was held in the Black Sea resort
Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, from 4 to 9 August 2008.

The Olympiad saw the participation of 16 teams of four contestants each.
Eleven countries were represented: Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, the
Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden, the US and (for the first time this
year) Germany, Slovenia and South Korea.

The site <http://iol6.linguistics-bg.com/index.php> contains information on
the International Olympiad in Linguistics and its sixth instalment. The
problems (statements and solutions)
in the nine working languages of IOL-6 (Russian, Bulgarian, Slovene,
Polish, Swedish, English, Dutch, German and Estonian) can also be found at
http://www.math.bas.bg/ml/iad/iol6pk/IOL6pbs.html.

If you can compose such problems, or would like to take part in their
editing (as a test solver, solvability prover, estimator of difficulty and
detector of parasitic solutions), or are interested in training a team of
secondary school students for participation in forthcoming editions of the
IOL, we would love to hear from you. Write to me (iad58g at gmail.com).

And watch this space for an announcement of the next IOL, which will most
likely take place in Poland in the summer of 2009.

Ivan A Derzhanski,
Chair of the Problem Committee and the International Jury of the Sixth
International Olympiad in Linguistics

Linguistic Field(s): Discipline of Linguistics
                     General Linguistics
