the 12th Biennial Rice Symposium on Linguistics, to be held March 27-29, 2008 in
Houston, Texas on the Rice University campus.

Deadline Extended to Friday, February 8, 2008

Rice Linguistics Society will host a poster session to accompany the 12th
Biennial Rice Symposium on Linguistics, to be held March 27-29, 2008 in Houston,
Texas on the Rice University campus.

Topic
The theme for the poster session is ''Development of complex linguistic
structures.'' We invite papers from all subfields and theoretical orientations
of linguistics that examine complex linguistic structures. Successful abstracts
will focus on the origin of complex structure(s) from the perspective of child
language acquisition, diachrony, language contact (including pidgin/creole
studies), synchronic change-in-process, or a combination of these factors.
Complex structures include but are not limited to complex predicates,
complementation, and relativization. These posters should complement the
symposium topic of ''The Genesis of Syntactic Complexity: An Interdisciplinary
Symposium.'' While the theme of the symposium is limited to syntactic
structures, research on any complex linguistic phenomenon will be considered for
the poster session. For more information on the symposium, consult

Submission Guidelines - Extended Deadline
The deadline for submissions is now Friday, February 8, 2008 (5 p.m. CST).
Please submit a one-page abstract of 300 words maximum in PDF or MS Word format
to rls rice.edu. An additional sheet is permitted for examples, references,
and/or figures. The filename should be authorname.pdf or authorname.doc. If you
use MS Word, be sure to use a common linguistics-friendly font, such as Doulos
SIL, particularly if your abstract includes IPA.

Please include ''poster session'' in the subject. The body of the e-mail should
include:
1. Name of author(s)
2. Poster title
3. Institution(s) of author(s)
4. E-mail address(es) of author(s)
5. Postal address(es) of author(s)
6. Phone number for primary author

Postal submissions will not be accepted.

Poster Presentation
Participants will be given a space approximately 6' by 4' to display their work.

Registration
Registration will be handled through the symposium. Poster presenters are

Die Innsbrucker RomanistInnen und TranslatologInnen freuen sich, die von Prof.
Dr. Gerd Wotjak in Leipzig begründete und wohleingeführte Tagungsreihe
weiterführen zu können, die als eine von ganz wenigen internationalen
Tagungsreihen der kontrastiven Linguistik gewidmet ist. Wie bisher sollen sowohl
theoretische als auch angewandte Aspekte (Translation, Spracherwerb, usw.) des
romanisch-deutschen und innerromanischen Sprachvergleichs angesprochen werden,
wobei der Ortswechsel als Anlass für eine Standortbestimmung genommen wird.
Daher sind insbesondere Überblickspräsentationen über einzelne Teilbereiche der
kontrastiven Linguistik romanisch-deutsch bzw. innerromanisch sehr willkommen.
Außerdem möchten wir den Themenbereich auf interkulturelle Pragmatik ausdehnen.
Wir ersuchen um Themenvorschläge zu den folgenden Sektionstiteln:

1. Kontrastive Phonetik/Phonologie
2. Kontrastive Flexions- und Wortbildungsmorphologie
3. Kontrastive Syntax
4. Kontrastive Lexikologie und Semantik
5. Kontrastive Textologie
6. Kontrastive Pragmatik
7. Kontrastive Anwendungen in der Translation
8. Kontrastive Anwendungen im Sprachunterricht.

Vorschläge für Präsentationen in den obigen Sektionen (mit Abstracts, bis zu 300
Wörtern, in Deutsch oder einer romanischen Sprache, sowie unter Angabe von
E-mail und Postadresse) senden Sie bitte bis 15.2.2008 an die OrganisatorInnen. 
Eine Publikation der Akten ist geplant.

Les Romanistes et Traductologues d'Innsbruck ont le grand plaisir de poursuivre
l'?uvre du Prof. Dr. Gerd Wotjak qui fonda et promut à Leipzig l'une des rares
séries de congrès dédiées à la linguistique contrastive. Comme par le passé
seront abordés les aspects théoriques de la linguistique comparée au sein du
domaine roman et entre aires romane et germanique (translation, apprentissage
des langues...) ainsi que leurs prolongements applicatifs. Par ailleurs, le
changement de lieu sera l'occasion de prendre la mesure et de faire le bilan de
nos approches. Aussi les interventions présentant un aperçu général sur certains
champs de la linguistique contrastive germano-romane et intraromane seront-elles
particulièrement appréciées. De plus, nous souhaitons étendre la thématique du
colloque à la pragmatique interculturelle. Nous vous invitons à nous soumettre
vos propositions de sujets dans le cadre des sections suivantes :

1. Phonétique/Phonologie contrastive
2. Morphologie flexionnelle et constructionnelle contrastive
3. Syntaxe contrastive
4. Lexicologie et sémantique contrastives
5. Textologie contrastive
6. Pragmatique contrastive
7. Applications contrastives dans la traduction
8. Applications contrastives dans l'enseignement des langues

Les propositions de communications (résumé de 300 mots maximum en allemand ou
dans une langue romane, plus courriel et adresse postale) sont à soumettre aux
organisateurs avant le 15 février 2008. 
La publication des actes est prévue.
