Description:

PhD fellowship: Grammatical Gender in the L1 Attrition of German and Dutch

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen is looking for a candidate to
conduct an investigation into the development of grammatical gender in the
attritional process of German and Dutch. The theoretical aim is to approach an
amalgamation of psycho-/neurolinguistic and formal linguistic (minimalist) views
on the representation of grammatical gender in linguistic knowledge. The
candidate will be a native speaker of either German or Dutch, with a good
knowledge of the other language (or the willingness to acquire it), excellent
English language proficiency, an interest in experimental, quantitative research
and a background in either generative linguistics or psycho-/neurolinguistics.

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen

The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) is a research institute
within the Faculty of Arts of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. It embraces all
the linguistic research in the faculty. CLCG is a part of the Faculty's Graduate
School for the Humanties. 

A considerable number of CLCG researchers participate in the interdisciplinary
Center for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN), and in the Landelijke
Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (LOT, the National Dutch graduate school in
Linguistics). Within the CLCG there are six exciting research groups:
Syntax/Semantics, Discourse and Communication, Language Variation and Change,
Computational Linguistics, Neurolinguistics, and Language and Literacy
Development over the Life Span. There are graduate students working in all of
these groups. 

Conditions:
The position begins Sept 1, 2008. It requires residence in Groningen, 38
hours/week research, and the stipend must result in a PhD dissertation. 
Fellowship Stipend: Graduate students receive stipends of gross of more than €
1500 per month, normally with slight cost-of-living increases in later years.
Graduate student fellows receive a contract for one year extendible for three
further years subject to evaluation after the first year. 

Your profile:
- a MA degree in Linguistics or a related field such as Computer Science,
Psychology, etc 
- preferably research experience  
- able to work independently 
- interest in interdisciplinary research 
- excellent record of undergraduate and Master's level study
