The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Research Associate
(Computer-Assisted Language Learning)

A full-time research associate is wanted, initially for one year, to start
as soon as possible, with the possibility of extension to the end of the
project in January 2009. The successful candidate will assist in the
collection, adaptation and testing of on-line language teaching materials
within the context of a two year Lifelong Learning project, AUTOLEARN,
funded by the European Commission and just started this year. Heriot-Watt
University is the UK-based partner in the international consortium running
this project. It is coordinated in Barcelona. Candidates should be highly
IT-literate, manifestly able to write and adapt materials for use on the
web and also to administer the local testing of these materials. They
should have relevant experience in language teaching, preferably abroad as
well in the UK, and in materials design. They should also possess a
relevant postgraduate qualification (applied linguistics and/or foreign
language teaching) as also the proven ability to engage with colleagues to
secure their collaboration.

Starting salary according to experience but not in excess of £30,000 p.a.

Brief Project Description
AUTOLEARN aims at adapting and testing courses for autonomous learning of
foreign languages. AUTOLEARN faces this challenge by introducing innovative
computerised monitoring of the learners' progress, through natural language
processing and artificial intelligence tools that analyse the learners'
productions. AUTOLEARN tested courses will integrate a communicative
approach to language learning with automated assessment technologies, thus
constituting the basis for a new approach to language learning services.

Before applying, candidates should consult the forerunner to AUTOLEARN,
namely ALLES (http://alles.atosorigin.es/ ) as well the local AUTOLEARN
website at http://www.hw.ac.uk/langWWW/cresla/autolearn.htm where a fuller
project description may be found and where the announcement of the closing
of applications will be announced.

Apply by email, with CV stating relevant qualifications and experience plus
two references, to Prof. Mike Sharwood Smith.
