The 11th New Zealand Language and Society Conference is a biennial conference of the Linguistics Society of New Zealand. 

Call for Papers

We welcome submissions to the 11th New Zealand Language and Society Conference on all aspects of sociolinguistics, including (but not limited to) language and dialect contact, language variation and change, language policy and planning, language maintenance and shift, bilingualism and multilingualism, social influences on language choice and language use, speech functions and discourse analysis, language style and register, language and identity, and language attitudes. Past conferences have included presenters working in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, languages and cultures, psychology, education, medicine and health sciences, and others.

Papers presented in the general sessions will be 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions. We particularly encourage student submissions, including presentations of work in progress. There will be a dedicated student session, with papers that are 15 minutes, plus 5 minutes for questions. Abstracts should be emailed by 1 August 2008 to anne.feryok at otago.ac.nz .

The abstract should be no longer than 300 words, and should be sent as a Word attachment.

In the body of your email please list:
- The title of the abstract
- The names and contact details of the author(s)
- Whether you are submitting to the general session or the student session.
- What equipment you require for your presentation (data projector, overhead projector, etc)

The Nature and Development of L2 French

7th and 8th July 2008 - University of Southampton, U.K.

Keynote Speakers:
Jean-Marc Dewaele, Birkbeck College, University of London
Florence Myles, Newcastle University

The conference is organised by members of the AHRC funded FLLOC research project team, with support from the Association for French Language Studies. It aims to bring together the community of researchers interested in the study of French as a second language. The plenary speakers will address the sociopragmatics of French SLA (Dewaele), and the morphosyntactic development of classroom learners of French (Myles). A number of other papers will present corpus based findings on other aspects of learner French (syntax, lexical development, discourse). The conference will also propose a hands-on CHILDES training workshop especially designed for those using or interested in using the program and its tools to analyse French L2 data.

Abstract Submission Information:
Proposals for further papers are invited on the above themes, and/ or on any other aspect of the nature and development of French as an L2. Individual papers will be 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation plus 10 minutes for discussion). 

Submissions should be made electronically, as email attachments, and should include the following:
1. Title of the paper,
2. Name and affiliation of the author(s),
3. Abstract of 300 words maximum (excluding references and the title),
4. First author's postal address,
5. First author's e-mail address.
