The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

The Department of English Literature and Linguistics, Hanyang University
invites foreign applications for a full time faculty position with the rank
open in the field of experimental linguistics to start on September 1, 2008
(or March 1, 2009). The successful candidate will be given one of the
following: conditional tenure-track, tenure-track or tenured position,
depending on the candidate's qualifications and research record. (The
conditional tenure-tack position means that the tenure-track status will be
determined after the initial 2-3 year contract period.) The position is
contingent on final approval by the university.

Area of specialization is open, as long as the candidate's research is
based on experimental work, dealing with theoretical issues of any
subfields of linguistics (e.g., phonetics, laboratory phonology, syntax,
semantics, discourse, psycholinguistics). (Candidates whose research
interests lie in psycholinguistics with word or sentence processing are
particularly encouraged to apply, but we value a strong
research/publication record.)

Minimum Qualifications:
The applicant must hold PhD before the job starts; must have at least 2
articles already published in international scholarly journals in the past
3 years; must hold a foreign nationality with a native command of English.

Responsibilities:
Teaching two courses per semester (what courses to be taught, however, will
be negotiable, but some general linguistics may be included); advising
undergraduate and graduate students; and sharing administrative and
committee work with other faculty members.

Salary/Benefits:
The average annual salary for the position is as follows:
full professor - around 95,000USD;
associate professor - around 75,000 USD;
assistant professor - around 65,000USD;
and a residence will be provided for 2-3 years.
The actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's teaching and
research experience and qualifications. Other benefits may include a
start-up fund and possible annual university research funds. Each faculty
member is granted one research assistantship to support a graduate student.

Hanyang University is one of the top 5 private universities in Korea to
which top 5% or better high school students are generally admitted. The
department has 6 linguistics and 6 literature faculty members. Professors
in linguistics specialize in experimental phonetics, laboratory phonology,
theoretical phonology, neurolinguistics, first/second language acquisition,
cognitive grammar, syntax/semantics.

The department has recently built a state-of-art
Phonetics/Psycholinguistics Laboratory (Director: Taehong Cho) to promote
research programs in experimental linguistics. It is equipped with a
magnetometer system (EMA), an Eye-tracking system (Eye-Link II), a
professional sound booth, two perception booths and other necessary
computer facilities. The successful applicant will have a full access to
the lab facilities. (FYI: http://tcho.hanyang.ac.kr and click "phonetics lab")

Application Details:
The first screening process will be made based on the candidate's CV,
statement of teaching and (past, current, and future) research interests
and 2-3 sample research papers published within the past 3 years and three
letters of recommendation. The letters of recommendation should be sent
directly to Prof. Taehong Cho at tcho at hanyang.ac.kr. Candidates who are
short-listed after the first screening process will be asked to send
original documents and formal university application materials.
