We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at
http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

A colleague of mine is involved in an ongoing anthropological research
project in Sweden that involves speakers of Swedish interviewing other
speakers of Swedish. He has asked me if there might be any software or web
site that might provide a first draft translation of the interview
transcripts.

There is one on-line site at
http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=Swedish&to=English
that we have tried, and it does a less than adequate job, even considering
the limitations of translation software. There is, unfortunately, nothing
in the Linguist List software catalog that fits this need.

If anyone has a suggestion, please email it to me. I will pass it on to my
colleague and will summarize what I receive for the Linguist List.

With my thanks,
