We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at
http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

Many languages possess ''verbs of removal'' that show the following
alternation:

1. John cleared the dishes off/from the table.
2. John emptied the water from the bathtub.

3. John cleared the table of the dishes.
4. John emptied the bathtub of the water.

I'm only interested in the variants (3)-(4), where the location is
expressed as a direct object and the ''stuff'' as an oblique PP.

If you speak a language that has something like (3)-(4), I'd be interested
to see the translations. I'm particularly interested in the shape of the
preposition(s) in these examples, so please gloss them in detail.

thanks in advance,
Zehavit Segal
