Linguistic Field(s): Semantics

Meeting Description:

IWCS-8 aims to bring together researchers interested in any aspect of the
computation, annotation, extraction, or representation of meaning in
natural language, in multimedia objects, or in multimodal messages.

Areas of special interest for IWCS-7 will be semantic annotation of natural
language and multimodal utterances; computational models of language
understanding; informal and formal semantics in language resources and systems;
computational aspects of semantic theories; and theoretical aspects of language
understanding systems and systems for multimodal communication.

8th International Conference on Computational Semantics
(IWCS-8)
January 7-9, 2009, Tilburg, The Netherlands

Endorsed by SIGSEM,
the ACL Special Interest Group in Computational Semantics

The Department of Communication and information Sciences at Tilburg
University will host the 8th International Conference on Computational
Semantics (IWCS-8), which will take place on 7-9 January 2009.

Papers are invited that are concerned with topics in these and closely related
areas, including, but not limited to, the following:

  * methodologies and practices for semantic annotation
  * construction of representations of meaning in natural language
  * modelling and using context in semantic interpretation
  * machine learning of semantic structures
  * informal and formal semantic methods and their combination

  * computing meaning in multimodal interaction
  * construction and use of underspecified semantic representations
  * semantic concepts and ontologies
  * approaches to textual entailment
  * the semantics and pragmatics of dialogue acts

  * the semantic web and natural language processing
  * semantic aspects of language generation
  * the semantics-pragmatics interface in computational perspective
  * semantic relations in discourse and dialogue
  * shallow and deep semantic processing and reasoning

ISO/SIGSEM Joint Working Group Meeting on Sematnic Annotation

Immediately preceding IWCS-8, on 5-6 January 2009, a joint meeting
will be held of the ACL-SIGSEM Working Group on the Representation
of Multimodal Semantic Information and of ISO TC 37/SC 4 on the
Representation of Semantic Content. This meeting will be devoted to
the development of methodologies, tools, and concepts for semantic
annotation, focusing in particular on:

(1) the development of an ISO standard for dialogue act annotation;
(2) the definition of an ISO standard for the annotation of temporal
    information; and
(3) the development of an on-line registry of concepts for semantic
    annotation for semantic roles, referential relations, dialogue acts,
    temporal information, and discourse relations.

This meeting will be open to (a limited number of) IWCS-8 participants.
