Special Issue, Summer 2008

Second Language Development
as a Dynamic Process

Guest Editor: Kees de Bot

The MLJ is happy to announce the publication of issue 92.2, entitled Second
Language Development as a Dynamic Process. It is a Special Issue on the topic of
Dynamic Systems Theory, guest-edited by Professor Kees de Bot.

Contributors to this exciting issue include Paul van Geert; Diane Larsen-Freeman
& Lynne Cameron; Marjolijn Verspoor, Wander Lowie & Marijn van Dijk; Nick C.
Ellis; Carolina Plaza-Pust; and Ulrike Jessner.

This Special Issue is based on the presentations at the Round Table on Dynamic
Aspects of Language Development sponsored by Language Learning, which was part
of the 2006 annual conference of the American and Canadian Associations of
Applied Linguistics (AAAL and CAAL). The audience's interest in this topic
mirrored an earlier experience at the 2006 Teachers of English to Speakers of
Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL) convention in Orlando, Florida.

Inspired by such a high level of interest in the topic, this Special Issue was
put together in the hopes that it would on the one hand set a milestone in the
introduction of new ideas on complexity and dynamic systems in the field of
applied linguistics and on the other hand allow a larger audience to get a
state-of-the-art overview of these ideas.

A list of featured content appears below for your convenience. We hope you will
enjoy reading the issue.

Sincerely,

The Editorial Office, The Modern Language Journal Prof. Leo van Lier, Editor
