Description:

Musical and Metrical Textsetting in Songs

Description of the project:

Metrics is the study of abstract forms, based on regular recurrences and
founded in linguistic genres (poetry, song, street slogan?) as well as in
instrumental music. The problem of relations that metrical forms,
linguistic forms and musical forms have with each other is a complex
question which opens numerous research perspectives.

The research proposed herein could be focused notably on one of the
following problems:

First, the question of musical textsetting in songs. That kind of problem
constitutes a research field that is very recent as well as very promising
(see particularly recent works by John Halle, François Dell and Bruce
Hayes). It should be soon one of the classic domains of metrical research
(and perhaps of musicology). For example, one should work on the degree of
correspondence between musical strong beats and phonological accents. The
aim would be to bring a direct contribution to that field, if possible
through a comparative study involving two or many languages. This research
may concern sung forms as well as chanted forms.
Secondly, the research may focus also on the correspondence between
metrical units and linguistic units. What are the linguistic units that set
the marked positions of the metrical form ? For that kind of problem a
diachronic perspective may be particularly interesting : do metrical forms
evolve in the same way than the linguistic categories they are associated
with? Are they relatively autonomous when compared to these categories? If
yes, at what point are they autonomous, and how to explain their differing
evolution? This research may concern spoken forms, sung forms or chanted forms.
Folkloric forms are a good experimentation field for that kind of problems,
because they are generally less dependant on athor's artefacts (artificial
inventions) than learned forms.
Studied languages will be if possible Romance and/or Germanic languages.

Candidate's profile:

A young doctor in linguistics who already worked in one of the domains of
metrics, if possible in a comparative or typological perspective. A good
knowledge of at least two Romance languages, or a good knowledge of a
Romance and a Germanic language is expected. In parallel the the academic
background in linguistics, a good training in musicology will be considered
as a useful and complementary qualification.
