Aunque la palabra de pluri- o policentrismo aún no figura en el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (RAE), el concepto sí ya está integrado en la ''política lingüística panhispánica'' de la venerable institución y de la Asociación de Academias. Es lo que afirma la RAE en su página web (http://www.rae.es) al explicar que ''la norma del español no tiene un eje único, el de su realización española, sino que su carácter es policéntrico''. Según la RAE ''se consideran plenamente legítimos los diferentes usos de las regiones lingüísticas, con la única condición de que estén generalizados entre los hablantes cultos de su área y no supongan una ruptura del sistema en su conjunto, esto es, que ponga en peligro su unidad.'' Estas afirmaciones son prueba de que el problema del pluricentrismo del español ya no es objeto de debate solamente entre lingüistas especializados sino entre quienes más peso y autoridad tienen en la reforma y modernización de las normas ejemplares del español. Parece que el reciente Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (2005) es el primer resultado codificado de la nueva orientación ''policéntrica'' de la RAE.
Desde que, a comienzos de los años 90 del siglo pasado, el germanista australiano Michael Clyne publicara una obra comparativa dedicada al tema, hay - al menos en la romanística de lengua alemana- un debate constante, intenso y apasionando para analizar más en detalle la situación del español (M. Bierbach, Eberenz, Gleßgen, Lebsanft, Ludwig, Oesterreicher, Polzin-Haumann, Pöll, entre otros). Por otra parte, este punto de partida no debe hacer olvidar - como subrayó en su momento muy acertadamente Francisco Zamora Salamanca - las teorizaciones anteriores de Georgij V. Stepanov y de Aleksandr D. ?vejcer. 
Dentro de la temática general del Congreso, ha llegado el momento de tentar una mise au point de las diferentes posiciones para saber (i) qué se entiende exactamente por ''pluricentrismo'' (en el mundo hispánico, en la teoría lingüística, etc.) y (ii) hasta qué punto las normas ejemplares del español se elaboran y se modernizan sobre la base de este concepto. Al mismo tiempo, las aclaraciones oportunas exigirán (iii) una reflexión profundizada sobre la realidad del diasistema del español actual y especialmente sobre las normas nacionales y/o regionales ejemplares del español. En este contexto será también imprescindible (iv) un debate sobre los conceptos de ''norma panhispánica'', español ''común'', ''internacional'', o ''neutro'', conceptos que tienen repercusiones en el lenguaje empleado por los medios de comunicación de masas en la era de la globalización (industria cinematográfica, agencias de noticias, televisión, radio y prensa internacionales, internet). Serán bienvenidas contribuciones teóricas y descriptivas relacionadas con uno u otro de los cuatro aspectos enumerados.

Second Call for Papers

Please note the deadline of 9th April 2008 for abstracts for the Third Newcastle Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.

This one-day conference, an inaugural event for the new Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS) at Newcastle, is designed to give linguistics postgraduates from all research areas an opportunity to present and discuss their research in an informal and intellectually stimulating setting. The conference itself takes place at Newcastle University on Wednesday 9th July, in the Research Beehive, Old Library Building, Newcastle University, with a conference dinner in the evening.

Professor Andrew Radford, of Essex University and Professor Mike Sharwood Smith, of Heriot Watt University, are this year's guest speakers.

We invite postgraduate students to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations on any area of linguistics, theoretical or applied (see http://conferences.ncl.ac.uk/pglinguistics) for abstract submission guidelines.
