Dear LINGUIST List Subscribers,

I have been part of LINGUIST List for the past four years. I started working at
LINGUIST when I was finishing up my undergraduate studies at EMU. I was offered
a Graduate Assistantship at LINGUIST to continue on to a Masters in Linguistics
at Eastern, and as you would imagine, I took the opportunity. I was not only
thrilled about the possibility of going through an MA without having to pay the
increasingly high tuition costs for an international student, but also about the
challenges and incredible learning experience that it is to be a GA at LINGUIST.

During my two years as a GA, I was an editor for the publications team, Publications
Manager, and team leader for the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad
site development in 2007. I also learned a lot of computer programming to allow
me to develop the Cambridge Extra Magazine site, in association with Cambridge
University Press, that was first launched in September 2007.

I have the honor of being able to stay working for LINGUIST as the Assistant Project
Manager, which is enabling me to continue learning about the field. I first joined
The LINGUIST List with just enough computer skills to get by and do basic things
for school and leisure. Now, because of my work here at LINGUIST, I actually have
some idea of what XML, ColdFusion, programming, SQL and database structure are.
Although I'm still always learning, I am faced each day with the challenging and
exciting work necessary to make LINGUIST work for everyone and make it possible
for other linguists around the world to keep updated on what is happening in the
field.

I have also been working on the development of a conference Abstract Submission
and Review system that we hope we will be offer to conference organizers soon.
This has been an extremely stimulating project since it is targeted to help small
conferences be able to have a wider reach in the linguistic community.

This year I am also in charge of Fund Drive and what it entails for the development
of LINGUIST, its prosperity and the incredible support it is for the linguistic
community and the graduate students who work here. I would like to thank you all
those who have contributed to LINGUIST in the past and again now, for you are part
of the reason why many of us have this amazing chance to be part of an outstanding
group and learn so much. If you have not donated yet, I would like you to consider
doing so as it will be a way of having LINGUIST work the way it has, improve as
much as possible, and aid the funding of another grad student's education!

PLEASE DONATE!

Dear subscribers,

This past year has been an exciting one for our publications area. For a while
LINGUIST and Cambridge University Press had been developing an online magazine
with the main purpose of allowing our readership access to full articles for free.
The result of these efforts was the launch of Cambridge Extra Magazine
(http://linguistlist.org/cambridgeextra/). Cambridge Extra is an online magazine
that features 4 issues a year. The first issue was launched in late September 2007
and the new one will be available very soon!

There is a short registration to allow you to have access to the site. However,
there is absolutely no charge for it. Once you have created a login, you have
instant access to the whole site! There are different areas in the Cambridge Extra
site. You can read 4-5 articles that are fully available to anyone who comes to
the site. There is a competitions area where you can answer questions to get prizes
from Cambridge University Press. There is also an area for News that brings up
information on new things that CUP is developing in the field of linguistics. In
the Special Offers area you can get good discounts on CUP titles!

Cambridge Extra has been developed to be a useful site to the linguistics audience.
There is a special area called "Have your Say" that is dedicated to Cambridge Extra
users to be able to send comments, suggestions, improvements and any type of ideas
about Cambridge Extra. We want to know what users find useful and interesting in
order to make the magazine better. We also love receiving suggestions on any aspects
of the magazine.

Cambridge Extra has been a big success so far with over 2,000 users since it was
launched. To visit the Cambridge Extra site, go to:
http://linguistlist.org/cambridgeextra/

We look forward to hearing what you think of the site and getting any comments
and/or suggestions!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later. To do so, go to:
https://linguistlist.org/donation/pledge/pledge1.cfm

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax
payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your
financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
