Meeting Description:

In October 2008 the SWISS TEXT CORPUS project will be completed and be made available online (www.schweizer-textkorpus.ch) as part of a corpus of the German language. It contains German texts from a wide range of different text types of 20th century Switzerland. The German seminar of the University of Basel takes stock at the end of this project and is pleased to announce a conference with the title Diversity in language corpora. The aim of the conference is to investigate the different dynamic fields of work that deal with language corpora.

The word 'diversity' in the title of the conference refers not only to the diversity of the corpus from a historical or contextual point of view or the diversity of the various kinds of texts and the conditions of their production and reception, but it also refers to the theoretical, technical and practical insights which were gained in the course of the project. 'Diversity' also adresses the various academic disciplines with which the language corpus came into contact as well as the various possibilities of use that the corpus offers.

On the one hand, the conference aims to present to the public the SWISS TEXT CORPUS and its partner projects in Germany (Berlin), Austria (Vienna) and Italy (Bolzano). On the other hand it aims to locate the completed corpus within a bigger framework and wants to provide a forum for a dialogue with current debates in related disciplines such as corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, lexicography, digitization and computer science.

The conference will be held at the 'Bildungszentrum der mission21' (Missionsstrasse 21, CH-4055 Basel), from 22 to 24 April.

Call for Papers

Conference languages are German, French, Italian and English.

Three topics areas are scheduled:
1. The building of language corpora (content)
2. The technical side of language corpora (structure)
3. Using language corpora

There will be a total of 16 20-minute talks followed by 10-minute discussions. Each topic area should be covered by 2 to 3 speakers.

Participants are also invited to submit proposals for a poster session or a workshop.

The organisers are planning a publication containing a number of the talks given at the conference.
Editorial deadline: 31 December 2008.

Proposals for talks, posters or workshops should contain the following:
- an abstract (500 words)
- the title of the presentation (talk or poster)
- the name of the author(s)
- the name of the institution
- address (postal address, telephone number and email)

The deadline for proposals is May 31, 2008. Proposals which are handed in later cannot be accepted.
The organisers will examine the proposals and communicate their acceptance by 30 June 2008.

Interspeech is the world's largest and most comprehensive conference on Speech Science and Speech Technology. We invite original papers in any related area, including (but not limited to):
- Human Speech Production, Perception and Communication; 
- Speech and Language Technology; 
- Spoken Language Systems; and 
- Applications, Resources, Standardisation and Evaluation.

In addition, a number of Special Sessions on selected topics have been organised and we invite you to submit for these also (see website for a complete list).

Interspeech 2008 has two types of submission formats: Full 4-page Papers and Short 1-page Papers. Prospective authors are invited to submit papers in either format via the conference website by 14 April 2008.
