The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

As part of the 'Innovation Fonds for Frontier Research' (FRONTIER) of the
Excellence Initiative, the University of Heidelberg advertises two
positions for researchers/PhD students (half-time positions, salary
TV-L13/2) for a joint research project between the Computational Linguistics
Department of the University of Heidelberg and the Natural Language
Processing Group at EML Research gGmbH, Heidelberg.

The project is about semantics-driven synchronous generation of natural
language and 3D scenes. The research will be carried out in collaboration
with the Visualisation and Numerical Geometry group of the Interdisciplinary
Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at the University of Heidelberg.

The ideal candidates have a strong background in computational linguistics and
possess a Masters or a Diploma degree in computational linguistics or a
related field. A solid background in linguistics and knowledge about
corpus-basedmethods as well as statistics is required. Java programming
skills are expected. Strong candidates with high qualification (PhD) may
apply for a
full position.

The project will start on August 1st, 2008. A later starting date may be
negotiated. The project will be funded for two years. Further funding is
anticipated but cannot be guaranteed.

EML Research gGmbH is a private non-profit research laboratory dedicated to
basic and applied research in IT. The NLP group is an interdisciplinary
research group that works on applications in the area of discourse and
dialogue, in particular coreference resolution, lexical semantics, text
generation, automatic summarization, and knowledge extraction from
semistructured input (see http://www.eml-research.de/nlp).

The Computational Linguistics Department of the University of Heidelberg
undertakes research in the area of multilingual language processing, with
focus on semantics and data-driven methods (http://www.cl.uni-heidelberg.de).
The Computational Linguistics Department is associated with the Heidelberg
Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences
(http://www.mathcomp.uni-heidelberg.de). Doctoral students can associate
with the graduate school and take part in special teaching programs.

Please send your application to the application address listed below.

Applications received by June 23, 2008 will receive fullest consideration.
The positions remain open until filled. The University of Heidelberg is an
equal opportunity employer. The candidates will be chosen by a joint
committee of EML Research and the University of Heidelberg.
