Asian ESP Journal in association with Chongqing University, China invites
proposals for presentations for its first international conference 'ESP in Asia'
from May 22nd to May 24th, 2009. 

ESP in Asia Call for papers

The First Asian ESP Journal and Chongqing University international conference
ESP (English for Specific Purposes) in Asia will be held at Chongqing
University, China from May 22-24th, 2009.

The aim of this conference is to bring together ESP practitioners across Asia to
exchange views on a wide range of issues in ESP practice and research. Through
this exchange, it is hoped that participants will gain better insights into the
world of ESP and the challenges it faces. Chongqing University with its long
history and educational excellence since 1929 and Asian ESP Journal are proud to
create this forum for this special event .

Keynote speakers will include:- Vijay Bhatia, (Hong Kong) Dr. John Adamson,
(Japan) Dr. Jill Burton (Aust), Prof. Joseph Hung (Hong Kong) 

Proposals (up to 250 words) for 30 minute presentations should be related to
research into ESP and the teaching of ESP in Asian contexts or with Asian
students. Papers in the following areas are invited:

- Research in Business English, English for Legal Purposes, Technical English
and other ESP areas.
- Practical studies into the teaching methodologies employed in ESP. 
- Innovations in ESP Course design, material production and evaluation.
- Inter-cultural Business communication.
- Bilingual teaching for tertiary level or adult education in China and other
Asian countries. 
- ESP teacher development.
- Studies on ESP corpus.
- Studies related to international research journal publication. 
- Content-based instruction (e.g. English-medium lecturing in Asian 
universities/schools ).

Abstracts in English should be sent to asianespjournal at gmail.com by 28th
February, 2009 and should include the following information:
1. Author's full name and title.
2. Author's affiliation and address.
3. E-mail contact address.
4. Title of the paper
5. Abstract (up to 250 words)

Notification of acceptance will be given by March 20th, 2009
Registration and details concerning transport and accommodation will be
announced on the Asian ESP Journal site

A Conference Proceedings edition will be published in 2009 and for this purpose

Meeting Description:

As the key that opens the gates to all education, imagination embodies the
creative approach to language learning and teaching. Traditional methods are
rooted almost exclusively in linguistics and focus on syntactic rules,
memorization based on the lexicon, and practice in oral and silent reading.
Imaginative methods, on the other hand, embrace nontraditional approaches where
music, dance, art, theater, dreams and creative writing are indispensable
elements or pegs to the learning and teaching processes. These methods are
powerful in their ability to motivate and reach children and adults as well as
special populations such as persons with learning disabilities. By engaging the
imagination, we can effectively promote the students' creativity and
imagination, lead them to a higher level of cognitive development, and help them
reach a new level of intellectual possibilities. 

Call for Papers

This conference elaborates the above principles and exemplifies related methods
of instruction by bringing together scholars in the broad area of language and
imagination. While papers on the main topic are particularly welcome,
individuals are encouraged to submit abstracts on any subject in theoretical and
applied linguistics.

Submit abstracts in an anonymous, titled, single-spaced attachment of not more
than 425 words in length, with name, address and affiliation in the body of an
e-mail. Please send abstracts as a camera-ready attachment (in a Microsoft Word
file, if possible) to the conference coordinator. Within the body of the e-mail,
please also indicate any audio-visual equipment needed. Those wishing to propose
panels or special sessions should contact the conference chair (Ninah Beliavsky)
before submitting an abstract for the panel together with abstracts for each of
the constituent papers.
Time allotted will be 20 minutes for delivery of the paper plus 5 minutes
discussion.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is January 5, 2009.
