Symposium on Second Language Teacher Education: Assessment, Achievement and
Advancement in Canada's Official Languages 

WHEN- Friday May 29, 2009 during the annual conference of the Canadian
Association of Applied Linguistics (ACLA/CAAL) in Ottawa.

A joint project of the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics
(ACLA/CAAL),the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT) and the
Society for the Promotion of the Teaching of English as a Second Language in
Québec (SPEAQ)

Organizers: Paula Kristmanson (University of New Brunswick- pkristma at unb.ca) and
Michael Salvatori (York University-msalvatori at glendon.yorku.ca) 

Call for Papers

We seek typical paper presentations (20 minutes) and workshops on practical
themes and challenges facing FSL and ESL teacher educators (45 minutes to one
hour). We invite presentations and workshops on topics such as: language
proficiency assessment and tracking, the integration of information and
communication technologies, linguistic duality within a context of diversity,
and gender considerations in second language teacher education programs in
addition to any current issues relevant to those involved in the training of
French second language or English Second Language teachers. 

Submission Deadline: November 15, 2008
NB- All proposals will be assessed by at least two anonymous reviewers.

second language teacher education programs including part-time sessional
instructors 

We have a modest bursary fund to help finance sessional instructors and those
who do not have institutional funding.

Abstract Requirements - Teacher Education Symposium 
1. Please submit your abstract by e-mail attachment to pkristma at unb.ca or
msalvatori at glendon.yorku.ca (if specifically for the teacher education
symposium) following the requirements listed below by November 15, 2008.

2. Paper sessions are designed for 20-minute papers followed by a 10-minute
question/discussion period. Workshops will be 45 minutes to 60 minutes in
length. Please indicate clearly which session type and timing is proposed.

3. Abstracts for single papers and workshops should be no longer than 250 words,
excluding references and should not include headers or footers that identify the
presenter(s). 

4. In order to help ensure anonymity, abstracts should not contain excessive
reference to its author's publications, presentations or workshops. 

5. All submissions should include:
a) A cover sheet with the name and contact information, including e-mail
address, for the first author/presenter, and names and affiliations for all
presenters. Please indicate on the cover sheet any specific equipment needs.
b) On a second page, a title and abstract 
For papers: 
- an indication of the theoretical orientation
- a clear indication of how the paper builds on the literature and contributes
to knowledge
-  for empirical studies, a clear statement of the research design
(participants, research questions, data collection procedures, types of analysis) 
For workshops:
- clearly indicate the research base, interest and relevance for the field, as
well as the presentation style. Workshops should include a variety of
presentation and activity types (some lecture, group work, interaction etc).
- indicate the timing for the workshop (60 or 120 minutes you mentioned one hour
earlier. In order to facilitate the schedule it might be a good idea to keep 45
or 60 minutes only)

6. Only abstracts meeting the above criteria will be evaluated.

Abstracts may be submitted in English or French and presentations may be in
either of Canada's official languages.

FOSSSIL announces the 4th LISSIM to take place in Kausani June 10-30, 2008, in
the lap of the gorgeous Kumaun Hills, India. Overlooking the highest peak on the
Indian side, Nanda Devi (7820m), and several other peaks including the famous,
Trishul (7120m), the Summer School venue is ideal for communal living and
learning, devoid of the usual distractions of a city, town or even a touristy
hill station.

The themes for the 4th LISSIM are as follows:
- Topics in DP Syntax and Semantics
- Topics in WH/ Relative Clause Syntax and Semantics
- Discourse and Context

The teaching faculty will consist of the following established experts in formal
linguistics topics

School is likely to be highly competitive and since the number of student
participants is limited to 20, prospective participants are therefore requested
to apply as soon as possible. Students from India are requested to apply for
