The Arabic Linguistics Society and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are pleased
to announce the 23rd Arabic Linguistics Symposium to be held at the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, April 3-5, 2009. 

Call for Papers

Papers are invited on topics that deal with theoretic and applied issues of
Arabic Linguistics. Research in the following areas of Arabic linguistics is
encouraged:

linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics),
applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis,
historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, etc. 

Persons interested in presenting papers are requested to submit a one-page
abstract giving the title of the paper, a brief statement of the topic, and a
summary clearly stating how the topic will be developed (the reasoning, data, or
experimental results to be presented). Authors are requested to be as specific
as possible in describing their topics. Abstracts should be submitted by
November 22, 2008 via e-mail to mustafa.mughazy at wmich.edu or via regular mail to:

Meeting Description:

The large numbers of bilinguals in the world and widespread migrations of the
1990s, have led to dramatic increases in the number of children being raised in
multilingual communities. This drives the need for coordinated research and
policies which reflect bilingual situations when planning assessment, treatment
and placement of migrant children with specific language impairment (SLI) in
appropriate educational frameworks. These needs are best served by studying SLI
in the bilingual context. The main objective of this workshop is to bring
together researchers who study linguistic and cognitive abilities of bilingual
children, children with SLI and bilingual children with SLI across different
migrant communities to discuss the linguistic and cognitive nature of bilingual
SLI.

Interfaces of Bilingualism and Specific Language Impairment Workshop
February 1-5, 2009

The large numbers of bilinguals in the world and widespread migrations of the
1990s, have led to dramatic increases in the number of children being raised in
multilingual communities. Typically developing (TD) bilinguals often look like
the children with Specific Language Impairement (SLI), creating methodological
and clinical diagnostic confounds. Medical, language and educational
professionals have limited test instruments to distinguish language impaired
migrant children from those who will eventually catch up to their monolingual
peers. As a result, folk wisdom reigns, often carrying the view that bilingual
children with language disorders should be educated in a single language,
usually not the language of the home. In recent years, several research groups
have taken upon themselves to disentangle bilingualism and SLI by establishing
the relative contribution of the each to impaired language performance.

1. A cover page with the title of the poster, all authors' names and
affiliations, and contact information of the 1st author (postal address, email
address, telephone). 
2. A one-page abstract (Times New Roman 12 font), with an optional second page
for examples, data and references. No identity properties of the author should
be found on the abstract page(s). Please center title of the presentation at the
top.

Cover page and abstract must be submitted electronically to
bisli.workshop at gmail.com in PDF or word format. In the subject line of the email
please state "Abstract BISLI" and the first author's last name.  

All authors will be invited to submit their papers for online proceedings.  

The deadline for abstract submission: November 15, 2008 
Notification of acceptance: December 1, 2008.

There is no registration fee, but you must register by January 10, 2009 at
www.as.huji.ac.il/workshops/isf/biligualism/. In addition, please send an email
with your name and affiliation to bisli.workshop at gmail.com so we know how many
to expect. In the subject line of the email please state "Registration BISLI".
