Meeting Description: 

The goal of the workshop "Experimental Phonetics and Sound Change" is to gather
scholars working on the phonetic and phonological factors causing sound change
to occur. Experimental evidence collected during the last decades calls for the
need to build better models of sound change which incorporate data on
articulatory and acoustic variation as well as information on perceptual
categorization mechanisms. Papers presented at the Salamanca workshop deal with
the explanation of  several sound changes: changes in vowel quality and vowel
diphthongization; consonant voicing, assimilation, palatalization, vocalization
and retroflexion; the structure of sibilant inventories. 

The workshop is funded by a project on sound change from the Spanish Ministry of
Education and Science. It will be held on Monday May 11th 2009 at the University
of Salamanca. There will be ten invited papers about 30 minutes long plus 5
minutes for questions. Presentations will be mainly in English but also in Spanish.
