Abstract:

Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) is widely viewed as the father of modern
linguistics. As the key proponent of the structuralist approach to human
communication, Saussure's legacy remains undeniable, yet is debated and
contested to this day. This brief survey aims to provide readers with a
concise introduction to Saussure's work as it now stands and an essential
update for those already familar with it.

The discovery of previously unpublished documentary material on Saussure
has enabled Roy Harris to write a comprehensive and often provokative
reassessment of his entire philosophy of language. It features
biographical, contextual and theoretical detail. Written by an acknowledged
expert, in an accessible format this is a new and essential introduction to
Saussure.
