non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Language Assessment

Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is
seeking to expand its research team in Language Assessment. CASL invites
applications for a Research Scientist to work in its interdisciplinary
research program on foreign/second language acquisition, maintenance, and
enhancement. CASL seeks a scholar with specialization in language
assessment with strong psychometric training and experience in all aspects
of language test theory, development and use. The successful candidate will
work with a multidisciplinary team on research projects that enable
government employees, especially foreign language professionals, to improve
their performance. Appointments to CASL are as members of the research
faculty of the University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts,
with a highly competitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Language
Assessment, Measurement Statistics and Design, or a related field (but with
significant specialization in language assessment) and should possess a
record of research achievement in language testing projects and a strong
record of publication. The Center is seeking people who will play a leading
role in the strategic direction of CASL and will participate in multiple
research projects in their field. Candidates' research and publications
should demonstrate the ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary
research and to work collaboratively with a range of institutions and
researchers.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the
appropriate security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliated
research center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research
that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work
of government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving
knowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition and
maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a government
profession; and improving the quality of human language technology.

Application: For consideration, apply online at the URL provided below and
submit letter of application, curriculum vitae, and three writing samples.
References will later be requested from short-listed candidates. The
position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected.
Application may also be mailed to the address provided below.

The University of Maryland is an affirmative action, equal opportunity
employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
