Description:

The international Research School "Education and Capabilities" is hosted by
Bielefeld University and Technische Universität Dortmund, which both have an
excellent reputation in research and doctoral studies and represent an
outstanding interdisciplinary basis for research. It aims at the analysis of
developmental options and opportunities that help children, adolescents and
young adults to advance their social and language-related competencies.
Therefore, using the Capabilities Approach, it investigates processes, relevant
attitudes and competencies in formal, non-formal and informal contexts of
growing up.

One of the focal points of the School's empirical research will be a large-scale
longitudinal study that provides for high-quality instruction in both
quantitative and qualitative research methods. It will also allow the doctoral
students to take an active part in the collection and analysis of data for their
own doctoral work. The language of instruction will be English.

Applicants are expected both to hold a higher degree clearly above average and
conduct their doctoral research in one of the School's research areas mentioned
above. Prior experience in empirical research methods is desirable.

Applications should be sent by email and include a covering letter, a CV (in
tabular form), an abstract of their final dissertation, two letters of
recommendation and a proposal for a doctoral thesis (4000 words in English or
German) in a pdf-file. Also included must be a full transcript of studies and
copies of certificates of academic degrees. Please note that original
certification or official confirmation from your University Registry will be
required in order to satisfy academic requirements. They should be addressed to
the director of the School, Prof. Dr.Dr. h.c. mult. Hans-Uwe Otto
(hansuwe.otto at uni-bielefeld.de).
Successful applicants will pay no tuition fees and will receive a monthly
stipend of up to 1,300 Euros.

For further information and more detailed possible research fields see our website.
