Theme: Mapping Africa in the English Speaking World

02nd - 04th June, 2009

Since 1998 the Department of English in the Faculty of Humanities at the
University of Botswana has hosted a biennial conference to discuss issues
concerning English language and literature in Africa. The 2009 conference,
Mapping Africa in the English Speaking World, will provide a platform to engage
with various issues relating to the representation of Africa, past and present,
in English. The department hopes that dialogue around such issues will
contribute to better understanding of the image(s) of Africa in the
English-speaking world, the relationships between Africa and English and the
extent to which English and other African related issues such as various
languages traditions (written and oral), cultures, etc inter-relate; the
construction of identities and development of relationships in multi-lingual
contexts; how culture and knowledge are effectively communicated between
communities; and so on. 

Call for Papers

The suggested themes and sub-themes of the conference include: 

The representation of Africa in various modes of communication (in English) in: 
(a) Spoken and written literary texts  
(b) The media 
(c) Theatre, film and other modes of performance 
(d) Music
(e) Anthropology, history, linguistics, sociology and other academic discourses.

Conceptions of African multilingualism, nationalism, identities and culture in
English cultures within Africa and beyond 

The English language in Africa: 
(a) Advantages and disadvantages of using English in Africa
(b) The English(es) of the African Diaspora
(c) The Africanization/indigenisation of English in Africa 
(d) English and postcolonial Africa
(e) Africa's enrichment of English: the contribution of Africa and the African
Diaspora to the communicative and expressive Capacity of English 

Perceptions of power relations between African languages and English
Conflicting interests: teaching African cultures in the English language;
teaching English in an African culture.
Representations of Botswana culture by foreign vs Botswana writers.

The department hopes that dialogue around such issues will contribute to better
understanding of the image(s) of Africa in the English-speaking world, the
relationships between Africa and English and the extent to which English and
other African related issues such as various languages traditions (written and
oral), cultures, etc inter-relate; the construction of identities and
development of relationships in multi-lingual contexts; how culture and
knowledge are effectively communicated between communities; and so on. 

Abstracts of not more than 250 words on any of the above theme and sub-themes
should be submitted via email to: monaka at mopipi.ub.bw. Abstracts must be
Microsoft Word documents. The deadline for submission is 31 March, 2009.

Academic or professional affiliation
E-mail address
Number of words in the abstract 

Please note that papers presented at the conference should not exceed a maximum
of 20 minutes. Conference fees and accommodation details will be communicated at

Call for Papers

Dear colleagues, 

the 6th World Congress of African Linguistics (WOCAL6) will be held in Cologne,
Germany from August 17th to 21st, 2009 (Monday to Friday). 

WOCAL6-Cologne (2009) continues the WOCAL series of Kwaluseni , Swaziland
(1994), Leipzig, Germany (1997), Lomé, Togo (2000), Rutgers, USA (2003), Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia (2006) and the interim Special WOCAL6 in São Paulo, Brasil (2008). 

The deadline for submission is December 20th, 2008. 

Theme:
The theme of WOCAL6 is "African Linguistics for Understanding and Progress".
However, papers on topics relating to all aspects of the study of African
languages (including African sign languages) will be considered.

An Academic Congress Committee will help to evaluate the abstracts. One paper
per scholar will be accepted, as long as it meets the scholarly standards
established by previous WOCAL conferences. The total number of presentations
will be limited to a maximum of 250. 

The WOCAL6 congress language is English. Papers can be presented in any other
language, but abstracts of all papers must be submitted in English. Abstracts
(approximately 200-300 words) are to be sent, preferably as PC word document
(with an additional pdf copy, if special fonts are used), to WOCAL6 at uni-koeln.de.

An invitation letter to facilitate your preparations for the Congress will be
sent on request after submitting the above information. Note that sending you
this letter does not mean that you will get financial support from us. It
should, however, help you apply for a German visa or financial support from your
university or other institutions. 

All Congress participants are urged to be in possession of a valid health
insurance. The organizers will not be in a position to accept any
responsibilities for medical care nor any other health costs which individual
participants may incur.

A Very Important Announcement! 

We're very happy to announce that there will be a workshop on African Sign
Languages, which will be held within the frame of WOCAL 6 on August 18th. A
separate registration for the workshop only is not possible.

Organizing Committee of the Workshop on African Sign Languages

Victoria Nyst (University of Leiden), Shane Gilchrist (University of Amsterdam),
Rezenet Moges (CSU Long Beach), Sam Lutalo (University of Central Lancashire),
Pamela Perniss (University College London), Sophie Dalle-Nazebi (University of
Toulouse 2), Eyasu Tamene (University of Addis Ababa) and Nobutaka Kamei (Tokyo
University of Foreign Studies).

Call for Papers

The deadline for submission is December 20th, 2008. 

Papers are invited on the following topics, although papers on other topics will
be considered as well:
Imported and local sign languages in Africa
Documentation and sign language corpora 
Signed language lexicography in Africa
Signed language teaching in Africa
Signed Langauage Planning and Standardization 

An academic committee will help to evaluate the abstracts. One paper per scholar
will be accepted, as long as it meets academic standards. Participants are
encouraged to devote special attention to the methodologies used in their research.

Registration for the workshop will run through the WOCAL 6 infrastructure.
