The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

Post-doctoral research position in acoustic-phonetic characteristics of speech

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scientist to conduct research
on properties of maternal speech input, particularly acoustic and prosodic
factors, and how these factors predict language development in children
with and without hearing loss. The researcher will be responsible for
conducting acoustic, prosodic, and linguistic analyses of recorded maternal
speech to children with normal hearing and/or hearing impaired children
with cochlear implants or hearing aids and communicating the research
through presentations and papers. The successful candidate will be also
responsible for oversight of undergraduate and graduate students working on
the project.

The candidate should have background in an area related to auditory
perception, ideally speech perception, speech production, and/or acoustics.
Relevant areas for the Ph.D. include, but are not limited to, Speech and
Hearing Science, Linguistics, Psychology, and/or Cognitive Science. The
successful candidate will have excellent organization and communication
skills and strong personal motivation. A clinical speech-language
background is not necessary, but is a plus. Experience with acoustic
analysis of speech segments and/or speech prosody, computer programming
skills, and/or experience with and knowledge of hearing impaired
populations are helpful. English language proficiency required.
Publications in English-language peer-reviewed journals are preferred. USA
citizen or permanent resident is preferred.

The researcher will have the opportunity to work with individuals across a
variety of departments (e.g., Psychology, Linguistics, Communication
Sciences and Disorders) in a welcoming, active, and interdisciplinary
research environment. Research will take place at one of two sites: (1)
Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, and/or (2) Bowling Green State
University, Bowling Green, OH. The salary is commensurate with NIH
guidelines for post-doctoral researchers. The starting date is negotiable;
we anticipate a target start date in the range June 1 through August 16,
2009. The position is contingent on the availability of funding.

To apply, please send the following information to Dr. Laura Dilley
(dilley at bgsu.edu): (1) detailed CV, (2) abbreviated, 2-page CV in NIH
biosketch format (see http://personal.bgsu.edu/~dilley/nih-biosketch.htm
for examples), (3) names and contact information for three references, and
(4) brief (1 page or less) statement of research interests and career
goals. Review of applications begins immediately; please submit materials
as soon as possible. Applications received by April 15 will receive full
consideration; applications received later than April 15 will be considered
until the position is filled or August 16, 2009, whichever is earlier.
Inquiries can be sent to Dr. Laura Dilley (dilley at bgsu.edu), Department of
Psychology and Department of Communication Disorders, Bowling Green State
University, Bowling Green, OH.

can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non
Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be
offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers
only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
