It is with great regret that the Department of Linguistics at Yale
University has learned of the death of Prof. Samuel E. Martin, a
distinguished emeritus member of our faculty, on November 28, 2009, at his
home in Vancouver, Washington after a long illness. Prof. Martin retired
from Yale in 1994 after more than 40 years in the departments of
Linguistics and East Asian Languages. He was also a fellow of Timothy
Dwight College at Yale and a member of Manuscript. He was quite prominent
in his field of Japanese and Korean Linguistics, and received significant
awards from the governments of Korea and Japan for his work.

A fuller appreciation of Prof. Martin's life and career will follow at a
later date.
