Description:

The Linguistics Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst
invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor
level beginning in Fall, 2010. This hire will be made in conjunction with
two other positions in the Departments of Psychology and Computer Science
to strengthen interdepartmental collaboration in experimental, theoretical,
and computational approaches to language. Qualified applicants should have
a Ph.D. in linguistics or a related field. Salary commensurate with
qualifications and experience.

The position in Linguistics has been designated for one of the following
areas: 

1. A psycholinguist with a program of research and teaching, pertinent to
the goals of linguistic theory, on processing above the level of the word,
with robust experimental skills and capable of running an active laboratory. 

2. A phonologist with a program of research and teaching that applies
computational and/or experimental methods to questions of phonological theory. 

Candidates in either area must have a strong record of research, clear
potential to obtain support for and maintain an active research program,
and strong teaching skills.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and
teaching interests, copies of research papers, and evidence of teaching
ability, and they should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on January 22, 2010,
and will continue until the position is filled. Hiring is contingent upon
the availability of funds. The department is committed to developing a more
