Description:

3 Grants in the International Ph.D. Programme in Linguistics (starting September
1, 2009)

Goal
The Ph.D. positions involve a research training and aim at the completion of a
Ph.D. dissertation within a maximum of three years. As part of their training,
Ph.D. students will take courses offered by the National Graduate School in
Linguistics (LOT).

Qualifications
Applicants should have an M.A. degree (or nearing completion, expected
graduation by 1 July 2009) in theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics
or experimental linguistics (language acquisition, psycholinguistics, phonetics,
text linguistics). Applicants should speak and write fluent English.

Grant conditions
The grant amounts to a monthly sum of €1550, payable at the beginning of each
month. It is allocated for a trial period of one year, to be extended upon
positive evaluation of the student's progress by a further two years (maximum).
The grant entitles students to supervision, office, network and library
facilities, assistance in finding housing as well as participation in the
institute's support system for linguistics-related expenses (including attending
conferences and LOT schools). As a member of the graduate school, the student
can participate in the Academic Professionalism programme of transferable skills.

For legal reasons, no grants can be offered to permanent residents of the
Netherlands.

Applications (by regular mail or by e-mail) should include a 3-5 pages project
proposal consisting of a research question well-grounded in existing literature
supplemented with a research strategy, provisional workplan and bibliography.

The application should also include a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae
including contact and personal details, transcripts of academic results, an M.A.
thesis or alternative piece of written work, certified copies of most recent
diploma and passport, and the contact details of two referees (names,
affiliations and phone numbers or e-mail addresses). Preferably, reference
letters should be included.

Applications that do not include a research proposal will not be taken into
consideration. Candidates are free to come up with their own research topic, but
they are strongly advised to visit the UiL OTS research groups document on the
website and explicitly target their proposal at one or more of the local
research groups.

E-mail applications should be sent to UiL-OTS at let.uu.nl in pdf or doc format.
Please observe the following: specify your name in the message as well as in the
topic, include a list of attachments in the message, and include your name in
the title of each attachment.
