Call for Papers

The Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex invites
you to its fourth postgraduate conference which will be held at the University
of Essex on Thursday 11th - Friday 12th, June 2009. 

The conference aims to bring together postgraduate students to present and
discuss current research, results and problems from any field of linguistics. 

Abstracts of no more than 250 words are invited on any topic in linguistics. All
abstracts should be in accordance with the LangUE 2009 submission form
http://www.essex.ac.uk/linguistics/pgr/LangUE/LANGUE2009/LangUE-subform.doc

Abstracts should not include the name and affiliation of the author(s).
Abstracts should be sent to langue at essex.ac.uk along with name(s) of author(s)
and affiliation details in the text of the email. In the email also specify
whether you intend to present a paper, a poster or a workshop. All submissions
will be peer-reviewed. 

The deadline for receipt of abstracts for oral or poster presentations is the
1st March 2009.  The deadline for receipt of abstracts for workshops (either
theoretical or practical) is the 16th February 2009. Please note that no late
submissions will be accepted.

Conference Format:
The conference will include presentation of papers, posters and plenary talks
just as in previous years. LangUE 2009 is becoming the first two-day
postgraduate conference in the UK. This year LangUE will offer parallel sessions
on theoretical or practical workshops.

Invited Plenary Speakers:
We are pleased to announce Prof. Moira Yip (University College London), Michael
Swan and Prof. Peter L. Patrick (University of Essex, UK) as this year's invited
plenary speakers.

All presenters and attendees must pre-register for the conference by Monday 1st

Second Call for Papers

Background:
MOL 11 is the 11th Meeting on the Mathematics of Language, to be held at
the University of Bielefeld in Germany on August 20/21, 2009.
MoL meetings are organized biennially by the Association for Mathematics of
Language, which is a Special Interest Group of the Association for Computational
Linguistics. The location of the meeting usually alternates between Europe and
the U.S. Previous meetings were held at UCLA (2007), the University of Edinburgh
(2005), and the University of Indiana (2003).

Aims and Scope:
MOL (Mathematics of Language) is a biannual conference devoted to the
mathematical study of languages and linguistics. Contributions to all areas of
this field are welcome. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- complexity and generative capacity of languages
- formal analysis of linguistic theories and frameworks
- model-theoretic and proof-theoretic methods in linguistics
- mathematical foundations of statistical and stochastic approaches to language
analysis
- formal models of language use and language change

Invited Speakers:
Andras Kornai (MetaCarta, Cambridge/MA)
Giorgio Satta (University of Padua)

Submission Details
We invite submissions of extended abstracts of maximally 8 pages (A4 or letter,
12pt single spaced). The material must be original and previously unpublished.
Parallel submissions to other conferences is possible but must be indicated with
the submission. The material that is covered in the abstract must be appropriate
in length and content to be presented in a 30-minute talk. Submissions must be
made before *March 15* via a dedicated website that will be put in place in due

Social Program:
A conference dinner is planned for Thursday, August 20. Details will be
announced in due course.
