The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Ancient Languages

Required Language(s): Greek, Ancient (grc)
                      Latin (lat)

Description:

3 Postdoctoral Stipends in Language Studies and/or Archaeologists,
Egyptologists or Art Historians
Research Group C-I-1 and/or C-II

In Research Area C "Perception and Representation of Space", Research Group
C-I-1 "The Conception of Spaces in Language" and/or Research Group C-II
?Images" three doctoral or postdoctoral stipends are being offered for
Linguists (preferably with an expertise in Ancient Greek and/or Latin)
and/or Archaeologists, Egyptologists or Art Historians (specialized in the
study of images and visual representation).

The core of Research Group C-I-1 is a graduate group consisting of young
scholars who work on the representation of space and spatial configurations
in language. At present projects on Akkadian, Egyptian, Hittite, and
Hurritic are included. It is expected that the applicants show a strong
interest and competence not only in individual language data but also in
more general and theoretical aspects of linguistics of space (e.g.,
diachronic semantics, language typology, Cognitive Linguistics,
Psycholinguistics). The successful candidate(s) will conduct research
focussing, e.g., on the diachronic analysis of how spatial relations and
dimensions are encoded in a particular language or its sub-corpora, how the
respective means of expression may be transferred to indicate other (e.g.,
temporal, social) relations. A project dealing with Ancient Greek in a
methodologically advanced and transdisciplinary perspective will be
especially welcome.

Research Group C-II is investigating the representation of space in
two-dimensional depictions and covers Greece and Rome from Early Greek to
Late Antique times, the Ancient Near East and Pharaonic Egypt. It is linked
with Research Group C-I-1 by projects on the interrelationship between
linguistic and pictorial representations of spatial configurations in
ancient cultures. Candidates who intend to study the specific manners of
depicting three-dimensional objects, the emergence and development of
perspective drawing or the combination of images and writing in the above
mentioned cultures are encouraged to apply.

Requirements:
- a doctoral degree in Greek Philology (with emphasis on linguistics), in
Linguistics, in Classical Archaeology, in Egyptology, or in Art History —
the grade should be significantly above the average
- Fluency in German or English
- Willingness and ability to collaborate within the respective research group

The grants are initially offered for 2 years and can be extended for one
additional year. The postdoctoral stipend provides € 1,500 per month. An
additional children's supplement can be granted.

Applicants shall submit a CV, copies of transcripts, a list of publications
where applicable, a short description of what they intend to contribute to
the respective research group, and the code number. Applications shall be
submitted in English or German.
