The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Cyprus
Department: Department of English Studies
Job Location: Nicosia, Cyprus
Web Address: http://www.new.ucy.ac.cy/goto/EnglishStudies/en-US/HOME.aspx

Job Rank: Visiting Professor

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Sociolinguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Pending final approval, the Department of English Studies at the University
of Cyprus is looking to fill two visiting positions (rank open) for the
fall semester, starting September 1, 2009 (first day of classes: September
7; last day of classes: December 5, followed by an exam period up to the 20th).

Each Visitor is expected to teach three courses, but a one-course reduction
may be negotiated on the basis of research activities that involve a
current member of staff.

Visiting Applied Linguist (Rank Open)
The successful candidate is expected to be teaching an M.A. course in
Applied Linguistics (first-year M.A. in TEFL students) and at most two
undergraduate electives (3rd- and 4th-year students). The elective can
cover any area the candidate is willing to teach after consultation with
the Department's Linguistics Section.

Visiting Sociolinguist (Rank Open)
The successful candidate will probably be teaching the undergraduate
compulsory course in Sociolinguistics (3rd-year students) and at most two
undergraduate electives (3rd- and 4th-year students). The elective can
cover any area the candidate is willing to teach after consultation with
the Department's Linguistics Section.

Note: There is a possibility that either post might be extended to the
spring semester.

Teaching takes place on Mondays & Thursdays or Tuesdays & Fridays;
undergraduate courses convene twice per week in a 75-minute slot, M.A.
courses convene for 4 hours per week (on one or two days), all subject to
departmental scheduling.

The visitor's salary depends on the rank he or she gets hired at, but it is
competitive. Please note that potential Visiting Lecturers must have been
awarded a Ph.D. and that potential Visiting Assistant Professors must have
held a full-time academic job for at least three years after their Ph.D. by
the time of application.

For all visiting positions:
- salary will cover four months (September to December 2009)
- and a third of the 13th salary will be paid as well;
- the salary is tax-free (whether for one or two semesters);
- social contributions are minimal (currently 6.3%).

Please note also that the University of Cyprus will not cover
transportation to and from Cyprus, sustenance or accommodation, or research
trips and equipment.

There is no set deadline for application, but incoming applications will be
evaluated as they come in. We are likely to make a decision sooner rather
than later.

The application package should at least contain:
- a statement of interest
- a full, current CV

Any description of your research activities and plans will be taken into
consideration for a teaching load reduction if the candidate is interested.
By default, the successful candidate will be teaching three courses. Note
that the class size of undergraduate compulsory courses is likely to be
around 40, of electives no more than 20, and of the M.A. course around 10-15.

The University of Cyprus is a Greek-speaking university, but all courses in
the Department of English are taught in English. Knowledge of Greek is
neither a requirement nor necessary.

To apply for either of these positions, and inquire about additional
information, please contact Dr. Grohmann via email (kleanthi at ucy.ac.cy).
