Meeting Description:
Meaning-Text Theory is a comprehensive linguistic theory characterized in
particular by the central position accorded to semantics and the lexicon, the
importance of communicative/information structure, and the reliance on
dependencies at all levels of linguistic representation. Over the last four
decades, Meaning-Text Theory has been applied to research in a wide variety of
fields, including morphological and syntactic theory, lexicography, semantic
representations, natural language processing (in particular machine translation
and text generation) and language learning and teaching.
This is the fourth in a series of conferences that aims at bringing together
researchers working in Meaning-Text Theory and other related approaches.
MTT'09 will be held in conjunction with the Workshop on Terminology and Lexical
Semantics

Submissions
Submissions are invited in any area of theoretical, computational and applied
linguistics within the scope of the conference. Graduate students are especially
encouraged to submit. Papers will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes for
presentation + 10 minutes for discussion). The conference will also include a
poster session.
Submissions, in English or French, should take the format of a paper of 8 to 10
pages in length. For formatting guidelines and submission instructions, please

Publication of the Proceedings
An electronic publication of the conference proceedings is foreseen.

Description de la Conférence
La théorie linguistique Sens-Texte se caractérise par la position centrale qu'y
occupent la sémantique et le lexique, par l'importance de la structure
communicative/informationnelle et par le recours aux dépendances à tous les
niveaux de représentation linguistique. Au cours des quatre dernières décennies,
la théorie Sens-Texte a été utilisée à des fins de recherche dans une grande
variété de domaines, incluant la morphologie et la syntaxe, la lexicographie,
les représentations sémantiques, le traitement automatique de la langue (en
particulier, la traduction automatique et la génération de textes) et
l'acquisition/enseignement des langues.
Ceci est la quatrième d'une série de conférences qui visent à rassembler les
chercheurs travaillant avec la théorie Sens-Texte ou d'autres approches connexes.

Soumissions
Les soumissions, compatibles avec le thème général de la conférence, peuvent
relever de tout domaine de la linguistique théorique, informatique ou appliquée.
Les étudiants diplômés sont tout particulièrement encouragés à soumettre un
article. Trente minutes seront allouées à chaque présentation (vingt minutes
pour la présentation elle-même et dix minutes pour la discussion). La
conférence comprendra aussi une séance de présentations par affichage ("poster
session").
Format de Soumission

During the last 150 years, the Baltic languages (Lithuanian, Latvian, Latgalian
and the extinct Old Prussian) have received much attention from linguists
specializing on historical and comparative linguistics, etymology and Indo-
European reconstruction. However, many aspects of the structure of these
languages and their dialects remain understudied and virtually unknown to the
general linguistic community. This is due not only to the lack of comprehensive
typologically-oriented grammatical descriptions but also to the fact that Baltic
languages are generally underrepresented in the 'discourse' of contemporary
linguistics, even in comparison to many much more 'exotic' language families
outside Europe.
The conference "Contemporary approaches to Baltic linguistics" aims at bridging
the gap between Baltic languages, on the one hand, and current trends in
linguistic theory and language typology, on the other, and at attracting
attention of the linguistic community to this rich and yet not fully
investigated group of languages.

We are soliciting abstracts on any aspect of phonology, morphology, syntax, and
semantics of Lithuanian and Latvian, as well as of their dialects and Old
Prussian. We especially encourage abstracts putting the Baltic data in a broader
cross-linguistic context, as well as theoretically-oriented work based primarily
on the material of Baltic languages. Please note, that although the topic of the
conference does no exclude diachronic studies (e.g. issues of grammaticalization
or historical syntax, as well as any interesting aspects of Old Lithuanian and
Old Latvian), we will NOT accept abstracts on etymology and comparative
reconstruction.
Abstracts in Word and/or PDF format should be anonymous and must not exceed 2
pages (examples and references included), 12pt font size with 2 cm margins on
all sides. Abstracts must be sent to baltistica.inslav at gmail.com no later than
March 25, 2009. Please, include in the body of the message your name,
affiliation, and the title of your submission.
Notification of acceptance: ca. April 20, 2009.
