- BA preferred but college students will be considered
- Preferred languages in addition to native-like fluency in English: Spanish,
Chinese, Japanese
- Preferred major: psychology, cognitive science, or linguistics
- Preferred coursework: cognitive psychology, experimental psychology,
statistics, developmental psychology, basic syntax, cognitive science, language
acquisition
- Preferred research experience:  previous laboratory research, if possible
including transcribing speech; work with two-year-olds
- Preferred computer skills: basic word-processing skills, database management,
graph and slide presentation, modeling, website maintenance; ability to program
in E-prime or similar experimental design packages
- Preferred statistical skills: knowledge of computer packages such as SPSS
- Preferred other skills: videotaping and incorporation of videos into slides
and other formats

Salary: $16-$23 per hour, depending on experience, background, and skills

Description:
Research Assistant positions are available in the Language Acquisition Research
Center (LARC).  LARC investigates first and second language acquisition in young
children and adults, as well as artificial language learning, computer modeling
of acquisition, and language use.  We use a wide variety of techniques and
materials to answer basic questions about syntactic competence and performance.

Funding is anticipated through June 2010.  Both part-time and full-time
positions are available.  Bilingual or multilingual applicants, one of whose
languages is Spanish, Chinese, or Japanese are particularly encouraged to apply
to work on a study with bilingual children and adults.  The positions are open
until filled, starting 1 March 2009.
 
Applications will not be considered or acknowledged if they lack a cover letter

Assistants on the projects at LARC:
- Record, transcribe, and analyze child and adult learners' spontaneous speech
- Develop materials for use in production and comprehension tasks
- Perform studies with child and adult participants
- Analyze spontaneous speech data and experimental data
- Recruit child and adult participants
- Supervise students and interns working on the projects
- Keep the laboratory running smoothly

LARC work involves constant contact with children, parents and other caregivers,
adolescent and adult participants, daycare and nursery school workers, and
instructors of adults learning English as a second language.  It also requires
the coordination of many different activities.  Assistants' patience, courtesy,
reliability, and maturity are thus important.  Assistants must work well with
children, adolescents, and adults; understand and accommodate the concerns and
needs of children and caregivers; respect individuals from a range of different
backgrounds; and be highly organized, reliable, and punctual.
