================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

To submit an internship, use our convenient web form at

Compensation: Paid $1200.00 per month

Description:
The LINGUIST List has a limited number of internships available during summer 2009 (May-August), tenable in the LINGUIST offices in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor, Michigan. These internships pay a modest wage and are available for 2 - 3 months, between May 15 and August 15. The dates can be adjusted to accommodate the schedule of the successful applicant.

Interns will primarily work on National Science Foundation-funded projects (information below). Interns also have an opportunity to participate in the normal workings of the LINGUIST List and to learn about the interaction between linguistics, computers and research, working alongside LINGUIST's regular staff of both linguistics and computer science students.

Application packages should include a brief letter describing your interest in and suitability for an internship, as well as your resume and your possible start and end dates.

You may send these via email to Maria Moreno-Rollins, Asst. Project Manager of The LINGUIST List, at maria at linguistlist.org.

Project work interns may be involved with includes work on projects funded
by the National Science Foundation:

GOLDComm: pursued in collaboration with the University of Washington, this project is designed to offer the average linguist access to large amounts of structured and searchable linguistic data by further developing the General Ontology for Linguistic Description (GOLD) and intelligent GOLD-aware searching.

MultiTree: this project will create a digital library of scholarly hypotheses about language relationships. Each hypothesis is presented graphically as an interactive hyperbolic display of a family tree, accompanied by information on all of the languages involved and the authors and bibliographical sources of the hypothesis.

LL-MAP: Language and Location: A Map Annotation Project. This joint project of Eastern Michigan University and Stockholm University is designed to integrate language information with data from the physical and social sciences by means of a Geographical Information System (GIS). The Institute for Geospatial Research and Education (IGRE) is also helping in the project development.

LEGO: Building on previous work done in the development of the linguistics ontology, GOLD, LEGO (Lexicon Enhancement via the GOLD Ontology) has as its goal the development of several "building blocks" for data interoperability within linguistics. Thus its aim is to: 1. Develop an extensive data interoperability network of GOLD-aware lexical items drawn from sixteen different projects and over 3000 languages; 2. Develop a set of "low-barrier" data requirements which lexicon creators can implement in order to join the interoperability network; and 3. Create architecture to integrate network data into frameworks developed by major international standards initiatives.

Interns will work 40 hours a week and receive a stipend of $1200 US per month.

Housing is not provided, although LINGUIST will assist you in finding accommodations.

International applicants must have a visa that permits them to work in the USA. At this time LINGUIST List is working on trying to find a way to help applicants obtain a J-1 visa, however this is not a guarantee.

Some of the past interns at LINGUIST List have opted to pursue an MA at Eastern Michigan University and continue working at LINGUIST List as Graduate Assistants. These former interns will be available to discuss LL internships at the 2009 Annual LSA meeting. If you will be attending the 2009 Annual LSA meeting, please join the LINGUIST List crew during the office hours and at the LINGUIST List booth in the Publisher's exposition room to meet current LL crew members and former LL interns, who can describe the experience of working for LINGUIST.

For information on longer term support available to students pursuing MA/MSc degrees at Eastern Michigan University, please see:
