CASTL at the Faculty of Humanities at The University of Tromsø, has two research

The period of appointment is 4 years.

For further information, please contact:
Professor and Center Director Marit Westregaard (see contact information below)
or Head of Administration Tore Bentz (phone number: (+ 47) 776 44751; e-mail:

The position is attached to the Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical
Linguistics - A Norwegian Center of Excellence (CASTL) funded by The Norwegian
Research Council and the University of Tromsø. The scientific group at the
center currently consists of 5 senior researchers, 5 postdoctoral research
fellows, and 20 Ph.D. students. Several other researchers and Ph.D. students
with other sources of funding are also associated with the center, such that it
consists today of about 40 researchers and Ph.D. students.

CASTL`s primary research activity is within generative grammar, especially
syntax and phonology. The successful applicant will propose projects that have a
connection to ongoing work at CASTL. This may be in core areas of syntax or
phonology, it could involve study of the interface between those domains, or
perhaps the acquisition of syntax or phonology. CASTL is responsible for a
Graduate School in theoretical linguistics. Individuals hired in these positions
are expected to follow the Graduate School program and to complete a doctoral
dissertation. For more information on our research and the Graduate School,
visit our website.

The successful applicant will have to document competence in theoretical
linguistics at the Master's level.

The normal period of appointment is four years. The PhD study is standardized to
three years. The fourth year consists of teaching or other duties for the
University, organized according to a distribution formula of 25 % per year.

For applicants for appointment, a 5-7 page description outlining a possible
dissertation must be put forward.

Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The main emphasis of the
assessment will be on the applicant's potential for research as is evident from:
 * Master's thesis or equivalent
 * Other scientific works
 * Project description
In addition, work experience and other activities of significance for the
implementation of the doctoral degree programme and possible teaching
qualifications may be taken into consideration. Administration and
organizational experience will be viewed favorably. Information and material to
be considered must be submitted within the closing date for applications.

Applicants must submit a list of all their scientific works including details of
publication.

The application is to be submitted electronically on the application form
