Research Associate in Phonetics
Department of Linguistics, Stanford University

Applications are invited for a 75% time position in the Department of
Linguistics at Stanford University, for a Research Associate in phonetics
with an emphasis on speech perception.  The Research Associate will
primarily assist Prof. Meghan Sumner with an NSF funded project examining
the learning and generalization of novel contrastive cues in speech
perception and spoken word recognition (20 hours/week).  The Research
Associate will be involved in the project at all levels, from basic
research and development to analysis and dissemination of results.  

Duties also include an additional 10 hours per week supporting the general
needs of the department at large in lab-based endeavors (e.g., computer
maintenance, helping students with scripting, experimental setup, equipment
purchases, etc.) Experience in speech perception or spoken word recognition
research is preferred, but not necessary.   We are searching for a
motivated individual interested in jumping into this position and in
becoming part of our vibrant community.  

Other Duties:

Perform skilled technical procedures to gather data in support of the
Research Associate's own portion of a research project; Administer
experiments; Conduct interviews and literature searches; Assist in
analyzing and interpreting research data; Schedule or coordinate use of
equipment and lab facilities; Search literature and use information to
adapt and/or modify existing methods; Assist in designing and evaluating
phases of experiments and research projects; Modify and adapt standard
protocols and procedures; Maintain equipment and systems and perform
modifications; Assist in preparation of papers for publication and author
research papers or reports; Orient new staff or students to general lab
functions; Maintain and control laboratory supplies and equipment; Organize
and attend weekly Speech Lunch series

Requirements:

PhD in Linguistics or related field (a recent PhD is preferred); Experience
in the acoustic analysis and manipulation of speech; Exceptional skills
using Praat, including scripting; Experienced with all aspects of E-Prime;
General knowledge of computer upkeep, backup, etc.
