Description:

The newly founded Semantic Computing Group at the University of Bielefeld
(please see the website) has the main goal of improving the way in which
people interact with knowledge, devices as well as autonomous agents
including robots. It builds on semantic technologies for this purpose.

The research of the group spans the following topics:

-language-based interaction with knowledge, devices and autonomous agents
-context- and situation-aware computing
-organization of multimedia data according to cognitive principles
-generation of narratives for advanced knowledge access
-the language-ontology interface
-multilinguality in the Semantic Web

The Semantic Computing Group will strongly collaborate with the Center of
Excellence 'Cognitive Interaction Technology' [1] in the context of the
above mentioned topics.

The group has several openings starting from October 1st for PhD and Post
Doc positions. The ideal candidate should be able to perform
state-of-the-art research in the above topics as well as contribute to the
teaching activities of the department (for around 3 hours a week
corresponding to 4SWS in the German university system). PhD scholarships
without any involvement in teaching activities are also available from the
Cluster of Excellence on Cognitive Interaction Technology.

The successful candidate will have a background in one or more of the
following topics:

-Ontologies / Semantic Web / Semantic Technologies
-Natural Language Processing / Computational Linguistics / Computational
Semantics 
-Cognitive Science
-Multimedia Information Systems
-Context-aware or ubiquitous computing
-Intelligent User Interfaces

Candidates with expertise crossing several topics will be preferred.
Knowledge of the German language is necessary for those positions requiring
a contribution to the teaching activities.

The group will provide the chance to perform high-quality and cutting-edge
research in an international context and in strong cooperation with the
above mentioned Excellence Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology
(CITEC). Suitable Post Doc candidates will have the change to perform
independent research on the topics of the group that qualifies them for an
academic carrier and allows them to position themselves as independent
researchers in the community. PhD applicants will receive supervision and
support in developing the necessary skills to produce high-quality research
necessary to earn a PhD degree.

The salary for both PhD and Post Doc positions is around 3.000 Euro (pre
taxes), according to scale TV-L 13 in the German University System and can
vary depending on age, marital status, tax class etc. The salary notably
increases with the duration of the position. An online tool to calculate
