Announcing the Society for Language Development's Annual Symposium:
Infant Cognition and Implications for the Acquisition of Language

Thursday November 5, 2009, 1:00 - 5:00pm
Boston University, George Sherman Student Union
Boston, Massachusetts

Invited speakers:

Fei Xu, University of California, Berkeley:

Rational Statistical Inference in Language and Cognitive Development

Gergely Csibra, Central European University, Budapest:

Natural Pedagogy: Infants are Prepared to Learn from Others

Renee Baillargeon, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana:

How 'Daxes' and 'Blickets' Support Infants' Causal Reasoning

Language acquisition depends upon children's conceptions of the world
and of other people. New research on cognition in infancy has
revealed that even before infants utter their first sentence, they are
already aligned with adults in surprising ways, both in how we
construe the world and in how we view each other socially. This
alignment is fundamental to children's ability to learn language.
To discuss these issues, the Society for Language Development has
invited Fei Xu, Gergely Csibra, and Renee Baillargeon to present their
work. The symposium includes their talks, discussion, and an informal
reception. Please join us!
