A small query about ''The Elements of Style'' for anyone who owns the
second (1972) edition of the White revision. The paragraph railing against
the use of ''hopefully'' as a modal adjunct (rather than a manner adjunct)
is present in the 3rd (1979) and future editions, but not there in the 1959
first edition.  Is it there in the 2nd (1972) edition, published during the
period (roughly 1965-1975) when the campaign to vilify the adverb in
question was at its height? The paragraph on ''hopefully'' will be found,
if it is there, in chapter IV, ''Words and Expressions Commonly Misused'',
just after the entry disapproving ''He is a man who'' (!) and just before
the entry attacking clause-initial ''However'' (!!).  Email response to me
if you can answer, please.  I will then post the answer on the LINGUIST
List to relieve others of the chore of responding.
