Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc in Language and Linguistics
School of Communication, University of Ulster.
Campus location: Jordanstown
Mode of attendance and duration: Available full-time and part-time.

- Postgraduate certificate - normally one semester full time and two
semesters part-time
- Postgraduate diploma - normally two semesters full-time and four
semesters part-time
- MSc - normally one year full time and three years part-time

Entry requirements
Normally, at least an Honours degree or equivalent standard in Linguistics
or a cognate discipline. For applicants whose first language is not English:

- A minimum score in IELTS test of 6.0, or
- A minimum score in TOEFL test of 550 (or equivalent in the computer-based
test)

Programme Features
The programme provides training in postgraduate level research skills in
language and linguistics. The programme is specifically designed not only
to provide students with postgraduate level conceptual knowledge and
understanding across the various areas of language and linguistics, but
also crucially to afford students the opportunity to focus the development
of their research skills within their chosen subdiscipline. Based within
the School of Communication, the programme is distinctive in its breadth,
offering modules in core theoretical generative linguistics as well as
modules in microvaritaion, conversation and discourse analysis, forensic
linguistics and health and therapeutic communication. The programme team
includes experts in the various areas of linguistic research all actively
involved in research on a variety of topics. The team also benefits from
links to research groups in other university in the UK and the USA and have
established a series of research seminars which brings in speakers from the
UK and overseas to deliver talks. The programme team has strong links with
speech and language therapy and several of the team members are involved in
research with clinical applications to language and communication disorders.

The programme is thus particularly relevant to 
- Students with an undergraduate background in language and linguistics who
are interested in progressing to a master and or doctoral level;
- Teachers of English as a Foreign Language who wish to gain a Masters
level qualification for career development and enhancement;
- Language professionals, such as speech and language therapists, who wish
to specialise in theoretical linguistics and develop their analytical and
research skills in language and linguistics;
