Description:

Post-doc at the Linguistics Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania for a
sociophonetic study of sound change, developing automatic alignment of wave
forms with phonemic boundaries and automatic analysis of formant values.
The project is a joint undertaking of the Linguistics and Phonetics Labs
under the direction of W. Labov and J. Yuan. A central goal of the project
is to advance the state of the art of phonetic analysis of spontaneous
speech, using forced alignment and automatic formant measurement to
increase the size of data sets by several orders of magnitude. The tasks of
the position include the systematic analysis and reduction of errors from
various sources. The candidate should have a strong background in acoustic
phonetics, programming and statistical measures, preferentially familiarity
with python and PRAAT scripting. 

The research project is centered upon a very large data base of recorded
interviews in the city of Philadelphia, carried out in successive years
from 1973 to 2008. A second goal of the project is to apply the analytic
techniques of the project to tracing sound change in progress across real
time and across the various social and ethnic groups studied. The
responsibilities of the position includes the supervision and training of
transcribers as well as multivariate analysis of the output measures. The
candidate should have some familiarity with sociophonetic studies of
linguistic changes in progress.

It is expected that the research will lead to results of interest in both
the technical and linguistic domains. The candidate will in part define the
parameters of the position by the direction of his or her major interest.

Appointment is for one year, beginning in fall term 2009, with the
possibility of continuation for a second year. Salary is $37,000. Send CV,
