The Department of English, American and Celtic Studies at the University of
Bonn, Germany is offering a newly accredited Masters programme in English
Linguistics. The University of Bonn is one of Germany's and indeed Europe's
most important institutes of higher education. It enjoys an outstanding
reputation both at home and abroad.

The Programme in Brief: 
This new taught MA programme focuses on the English language in its social,
cultural and historical contexts world-wide. English is analysed from a
functional, rather than a formal perspective. Mediality and communicative
purpose are given precedence over purely structural aspects. Areas of
specialization include text and discourse analysis, stylistics, pragmatics,
sociolinguistics, and corpus linguistics.

This MA programme aims at developing knowledge of theories and methods in
those areas which are immediately relevant to solving problems concerning
text analysis and text production, rhetoric and intercultural
communication. Students are empowered to address such problems
professionally and to conduct their own projects. The Master's programme
qualifies students for a wide range of positions in fields related to
language, communication and culture. Successful completion of the programme
also qualifies students for Ph.D. programmes in The Linguistics of
Present-Day English, Historical Linguistics or Applied Linguistics.


Basic Information: 
Admission requirements: 
- Bachelor of Arts degree in a related academic area. 
- Applicants will be submitted to a selection procedure which may involve
an interview or a written test.
- High proficiency of English, working knowledge of German and of a further
foreign language.
- Strong interest in exploring linguistic and cultural issues and in
working empirically

Application deadline: 15 July 2009; studies will begin in October 2009
(winter term 2009/10)

Duration: 2 years (120 credits)

Degree requirements: 9 core courses, 2 elective courses plus an empirical
thesis (30 credits)
