Meeting Description:

Contrary to common belief, multilingualism and language contact are neither recent phenomena nor are they rooted in modern globalization. Multilingualism and language contact constitute one of the basic conditions of human culture and occur in all types of societies, ranging from so-called 'primitive' to industrial and post-industrial societies.

The goal of this workshop, hosted by the 37th Austrian Conference on Linguistics (37. Österreichische Linguistiktagung, 5 - 7 December 2009 in Salzburg) is to bring together researchers of language contact and multilingualism working in different theoretical and methodological frameworks.

Call for Papers:

Topics of Interest:

- Contact induced language change;
- Diglossia, polyglossia and similar scenarios;
- Individual vs. social multilingualism;-
- The multilingual brain;
- Problems of standardization in multilingual settings;
- Syntax and pragmatics of code switching and code mixing;
- Mixed language vs. language mixing:
- Language death and ''linguicide'';
- Documentation of language contact.

Each presentation slot will be 45 min. (including 15 min. for discussion).

Please submit your abstract (in German, English or French) to imke.mendoza at sbg.ac.at or bernhard.poell at sbg.ac.at no later than 15 October 2009. The abstract should not exceed 300 words.
