Directionals are forms like sh\ang ?, xi\a ? and l|ai ?, q\u ? that
frequently occur in Chinese to complement main verbs in a V+DIR structure.
Stemming from motions verbs evolving into verbal complements, they sometimes
grammaticalize into functional markers with further depleted lexical meaning.
Across modern Chinese dialects, directionals vary with respect to differing co-
occurrence restrictions with main verbs, and disparate functions in signaling
spatial and aspectual relations.

This two-day workshop aims to provide an informal arena for international
colleagues interested in linguistic issues related to directionals in Chinese
to freely exchange relevant data, ideas, and research expertise. By
incorporating the dimension of cross-dialectal typological variations, it will
be the objective of this workshop to pursue a deeper understanding of the
nature and evolution of directionals, as well as of their place in linguistic
typology.
