Dear colleagues,

I write to remind you of the 2009 Linguistic Institute, to be held this
year in Berkeley, California from July 6 through August 13. We are very
pleased by the response to our call for fellowship applications: over 240
student LSA members completed the elaborate process of applying for
fellowships. Initial fellowship decisions will be made within the next two
weeks.

Unfortunately we do not have many affiliate registrations yet. Institute
''affiliates'' are participants who are no longer students; who have
academic, research, or other positions; and who want to attend the
Institute for their professional and personal development. As you may know,
most of the funding for student fellowships comes directly from affiliate
registration fees. The more affiliates attend an Institute, the more that
Institute benefits both directly from their presence in classes and
conferences, and indirectly from the fellowships they help support.

This is to urge you, if you are planning to attend the 2009 Institute as an
affiliate, to register as soon as possible. To be straightforward about it:
if you are planning to come, the sooner we get your money the easier it is
to use it for student fellowships. Information about courses, lectures and
conferences, housing, and registration can be found at our website:

http://lsa2009.berkeley.edu/

Thank you! We look forward to seeing many of you in Berkeley this summer.

Best wishes,
Andrew Garrett
