Description:

Two Research Project Support Officers-ESRC Centre for Reserach on Bilingualism 

Grade 6: £23,449 - £28,839 p.a.

1.Research Project Support Officer (Project on Welsh-English code-switching)

A Research Project Support Officers is required for a project funded by the
Arts and Humanities Research Council on code-switching and convergence in
Welsh, which is being conducted by Professor Margaret Deuchar, Director of
the ESRC Centre for Research on Bilingualism. The person appointed will
work in the dedicated Centre building alongside other researchers working
on related projects.

The intention is to appoint one full-time postdoctoral candidate if
possible. However, applications for a part-time post will also be
considered, especially from able candidates with an M.A. or M.Sc. who would
be interested in also registering for a Ph.D. The main responsibilities
will be to transcribe, code and analyse conversational data and assist with
publications on the evaluation of competing models of code-switching.

Candidates should be native or near-native speakers of Welsh. They should
have a post-graduate degree in linguistics or a closely related subject and
should have experience in the transcription and/or analysis of linguistic
data. Knowledge of another language such as Spanish could be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible and
the position is available until end of August, 2010.

2. Research Project Support Officer (Corpus-based research group)

A Research Project Support Officer is required to assist with the research
programme being conducted by the corpus-based research group of the ESRC
Centre for Research on Bilingualism (see www.bilingualism.bangor.ac.uk).
This programme includes the collection, transcription and analysis of
Welsh-Spanish bilingual conversational data in Patagonia as well as the
transcription and analysis of Spanish-English data which have already been
collected. 

The position will start as soon as possible and will last for two years in
the first instance, with the possibility of renewal. The intention is to
appoint a full-time postdoctoral candidate if possible. However,
applications for a part-time post will also be considered, especially from
able candidates with an M.A. or M.Sc. who would be interested in also
registering for a Ph.D. The main responsibilities will be to collect,
transcribe, code and analyse conversational data, depending on the
appointee's language competence, and to participate in the writing of
research papers. The person appointed will be one of eight researchers
appointed to the Centre and will work as part of a team.

Candidates should be native or near-native speakers of either Welsh or
Spanish, or both. They should have a post-graduate degree in linguistics or
a closely related subject and should have experience in the transcription
and/or analysis of linguistic data.
