Description:

The University of Macau is a government-funded institution located in the
Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The
Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities
is seeking to appoint a Professor in Portuguese Studies
(Ref No:FSH/DPORT/PS/03/2009).

Qualification
The successful candidate will demonstrate academic involvement in
Portuguese Studies at an international level, a strong sense of, and
respect for the Portuguese language as a world language with two standard
forms and existing in more than one variety, a strong awareness of
Lusophone culture internationally, and a broad understanding of, and
appreciation for, the whole area of Portuguese Studies. The successful
candidate will have a distinguished record of publication at an
international level. While preference will be given to specialists in the
area of Portuguese Language Studies, and such areas as Portuguese as a
Foreign or Second Language, and Portuguese Language Acquisition Studies
will be of special interest, applications from candidates with
specializations relevant to other academic areas in the Department of
Portuguese will also be considered. Applications are particularly
encouraged from those who may have a research record in cross-cultural areas. 

Key components of this position will be the further development of the
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in line with international best
practice, and the development of the Department's research output at an
international level. The appointee will be required to contribute strategic
leadership in these areas. The creation of a centre for research of the
Portuguese-speaking countries is anticipated, and the successful candidate
for the above position would be expected to make a significant contribution
to the development of the centre.

Candidates should also have appropriate administrative experience at a
senior level and must be able to demonstrate substantial leadership
abilities. The appointee will be required to teach courses at the
undergraduate and postgraduates levels and to provide MA and PhD thesis
supervision. 

Position and Taxable Annual Salary
The position offered and taxable salary level shall be determined according
to the appointee's academic qualifications, current position, and
professional experience. Under special circumstances where a Chair
Professorship is offered, a higher remuneration is possible. Current local
