(This message is a reminder of the 3L Summer School to be held in London
this summer.)

The Department of Linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies
is proud to host the second 3L International Summer School on Language
Documentation and Description from 22 June - 3 July.

This two week summer school aims at introducing the concepts and practices
of language documentation and its links to language description for future
and novice field linguists. It will draw upon the extensive expertise of
the three organizing universities in the 3L Consortium: University of Lyon,
Leiden University and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London,
with additional significant participation this year from the Deafness
Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) based at University College
London. It follows on from the success of the first 3L Summer School held
in Lyon in 2008.

The school focuses on providing theoretical knowledge necessary to pursue
language documentation and description in tandem with offering hands on
training in technical areas of language documentation, data management and
archiving.

It features courses covering a wide range of topics that include
lexicography, data management and archiving, the use of media in language
documentation, sign language documentation, linguistic typology and areal
linguistics, with a full day dedicated to practical training in using
software tools, advanced video and advanced audio documentation.

Please note that scholarships are available, which in some cases cover the
FULL COST of attending the event, including accommodation and
transportation. Please see the website for details. It is also anticipated
that sign language interpretation services will be available in both BSL
and ASL.

Important Dates:

15 April: Scholarship applications due
11 May: Early bird registration
21 June: Registration

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non
Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be
offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers
only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
