Although it still constitutes a relatively new empirical field, the study of the
relationship between scalar structure and event structure has proved very
fruitful over the past few years, by nourishing a wealth of new formal and
theoretical approaches to aspectual meaning. The notion of scales/scalar
structures/degree scales has been playing a prominent role in the aspectual
literature since the 1990's, following seminal work by e.g. Ch. Kennedy, L.
McNally, J. Hay & B. Levin; and a large number of recent contribution to the
domain of aspect/Aktionsart have focused on this very issue (cf. Rothstein 2004,
Filip & Rothstein 2005, Filip 2007, Winter 2006, Caudal & Nicolas 2005, Gawron
2006, Piñón 2008, Kennedy & Levin 2008, Beavers 2008, among others).
The present workshop (co-organized by U. Paris 7 and U. Chicago, and hosted by
the Chronos 9 Colloquium) will constitute a unique opportunity of bringing
together and confronting different recent approaches to the connection between
aspect and scalarity, and of assessing their predictive power by applying them
to original data (cf. e.g. Thomas 2007). 

Call for Papers 

Workshop on Scalar structure and Event structure
University Paris-Diderot/Paris 7, September 2-4, 2009
Deadline : May 31, 2009

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes for
discussion). All presentations will be delivered in French or in English.

Preference will be given to presentations not duplicated at any major
conferences (e.g., LSA, LSRL)

Abstracts must be anonymous and written in French or in English. They should be
no longer than two pages in length using 1 inch/2.5 cm margins on all sides and
in 12pt font size (Times New Roman preferred). Any non-standard fonts should be
embedded in the PDF document. Submissions are limited to one individual and one
joint abstract per author.

Abstract submission deadline: May 31, 2009

Authors are asked to submit their anonymous abstracts as pdf files via the
special Chronos 9 EasyAbs submission page, hosted on the LINGUIST List server
(click here to access the paper submission page)

Click on the link and follow the instructions there. When submitting your
abstract via the Chronos 9 EasyAbs webpage, please specify that it should be
considered for the Workshop on Scalar structure & Event Structure.

Please note the following:  Only online PDF submissions at the site specified
above will be accepted. When you create the PDF file, please make sure to remove
any information that may lead to identify the author(s): in Acrobat, go "File:
Document Properties." This step will be checked before the review process.
