Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks a
post doctoral researcher for a 3-year project entitled Alor and Pantar
Languages: Origins and Theoretical Impacts, funded as part of the European
Science Foundation EuroBABEL Programme

The position starts September 1, 2009 (or later - starting date is
negotiable) and lasts three years. Applicants should have Ph.D. in hand or
expect to complete all requirements for the Ph.D. prior to appointment.
Applicants should have solid fieldwork skills and a commitment to
documentary linguistics, in addition to strong analytical and quantitative
skills that can contribute to the integration of documentation into
theoretical frameworks. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in at
least one of the following two areas: (i) spatial reference systems and
landscape categorization; and/or (ii) historical-comparative linguistics.
Candidates must have the ability to work independently while functioning as
part of a research team. 

Candidates must be willing to travel and conduct research in remote and
demanding environments. Candidates should have a working knowledge of
Indonesian or a willingness to learn (training will be provided). Though
based administratively at the University of Alaska, the majority of the
project will be devoted to fieldwork in Indonesia and regular project
meetings with collaborators in Europe. 

This is a research position and does not include a teaching assignment.
Starting salary is US $48,685, with subsequent annual increases. A

The Project

The project aims to document and analyze the Alor-Pantar languages by
integrating existing documentary materials, new fieldwork, and typological
analysis. The Alor-Pantar languages are a group of 15-20 non-Austronesian
('Papuan') languages spoken on several islands in eastern Indonesia. They
are of special interest because they have no established genetic relatives.
A relationship to the Trans New Guinea family has been proposed, but
remains highly disputed, due to the lack of quality data. Documentation of
these languages has recently begun, but the material has yet to be analyzed
in a rigorous fashion, and there remain many significant gaps in the data.
Because Alor-Pantar language data have not been widely available, the
implications of these languages for language classification, migration
patterns, and morphosyntactic and semantic typology remain largely unexplored. 

The project will be conducted by an international research team, including
senior researchers, post doctoral fellows, and graduate students in the US,
Netherlands, United Kingdom and Indonesia. Project members will conduct
targeted fieldwork in Alor and Pantar for between four and six months in
each of the project years, focusing on spatial reference systems, word
class typology, and linguistic prehistory. Fieldwork data will be
synthesized to address the theoretical questions posed by the project.
