Description:

The Excellence Initiative of the Free and Hanseatic City are to award 5
doctoral candidate scholarships starting January 1st 2010 in the following
subject fields:
(1) Empirical educational research
(2) Language contact and language development in educational institutions
(3) Multilingual communication
(4) Multilingual urban spaces
(5) Language contact, language variation and academic discourse

The scholarships are offered as an integral part of the federal Cluster of
Excellence "Linguistic Diversity Management in Urban Areas", a cooperative
research endeavor of the Humanties and the department of Education at
Hamburg University, the Harbour City University of Hamburg and the Hamburg
Global Economy Institute.The Research Cluster aims to bring together
existing top-level expertise in linguistic and educational aspects of
multilingualism at the University of Hamburg and to combine and focus this
expertise on the investigation of migration-induced multilingualism as
found in urban centers worldwide. It will investigate whether and in what
way migration-induced multilingualism can be translated into advantages for
individuals and society and into benefits for the cultural and economic
development of urban centers. The city of Hamburg will serve as a model for
an international comparison of similar urban centers. The Cluster will
implement extensive and interdisciplinary graduate training and establish
an International Graduate School together with the University of Calgary.
Applicants must hold an above-average degree in a field appropriate to the
respective research area(s). They will be expected to work and actively
participate in a fast-paced and interdisciplinary environment with a
particular focus on applied empirical research.

Scholarship candidates will receive a monthly stipend of €1,150. In
addition to the scholarship, a monthly allowance of €100 is provided
for material and travel expenses. The scholarship will be granted for a 1-year
period with the option of a second year of funding following a favourable
evaluation of the project.
